4 Must-Dos to Increase Home Energy Efficiency

Making your home more energy-efficient is a great way to save money and help the environment. But it can be tricky to know where to start. Here are four must-dos to get you started.

1. Swap Out Your Lightbulbs

Swap out incandescent lightbulbs for CFL or LED bulbs. Even though they cost more initially, they use at least 80% less energy than incandescent lightbulbs. They also last much longer. Just make sure you dispose of them properly, since most local recycling programs don’t accept mercury-containing CFLs.

2. Seal Air Leaks with Weatherstripping

Seal your home’s air leaks to save money and keep heat or cool air where it belongs (i.e., inside). Weatherstripping doors, windows, and other places is a small but effective way to improve your home’s energy efficiency.

3. Get an Efficient Cooling System

Invest in a new cooling system. An energy-efficient air conditioner uses at least 20% to 40% less electricity than an older model and is likely to cost you less money each month on your electric bill. For those with modern HVAC systems, you can still take some steps to ensure they are operating at optimum efficiency. These include:

Change air filters: Dirty air filters keep air from flowing smoothly through your system, causing it to work harder and longer. Replacing them every month or two will improve airflow and reduce wear and tear on the compressor.

Keep the air intake and exhaust clear: Air entering or leaving your home must pass through the air handler unit. Clogged air intakes and outlets can decrease airflow, making the system work harder.

Get HVAC maintenance: Air conditioners work more efficiently when they are maintained regularly. Once or twice a year, call air conditioning contractors to tune up your system and ensure it runs at peak performance.

4. Use a Programmable Thermostat

Most air conditioning contractors will recommend installing a programmable thermostat in your home. They can automatically adjust to your daily routine and save you money on air conditioning costs by allowing your air conditioner to run less while you are away or sleeping.

With these simple steps, you can take your home’s energy efficiency up a notch and enjoy the benefits all year long. Are you looking for professional air conditioning contractors? Our highly trained and experienced technicians are standing by to help you.
